Roles + Appreciation ~ Chicago Wedding Photographer

When James and I first moved in together 3.5 years ago it was a bit of an adjustment (to say the least). We had obviously spent a lot of time together prior to that, but nothing can quite prepare you for what it is like to actually live with someone. We had to figure out our roles… who did what and when. It took us a while (and some butting of heads/arguing along the way), but I feel like now, 3.5 years later, we finally have it (mostly) down to a science…

James walks Chloe when it is dark outside. I walk Chloe during daylight hours. (Right now this is feeling like a bit of a rip off – but come wintertime when James is walking her from 4pm until 7am – I’ll feel much better about this arrangement!) 😉

James grocery shops. I make lattes and cook us dinner.

James scrubs the tubs. I clean the toilets.

James drives. I talk. (…to keep him awake and alert, of course.)

James gives me massages and plays with my hair. I touch up his beard/goatee and check to make sure he doesn’t miss any spots when he shaves his head. (Okay, maybe I get the better end of the deal here…)

James does all the laundry. I ask him if my shirt is clean yet.

James runs our dress clothes to the laundry mat. I lay out his outfit the night before we shoot a wedding.

James gets the oil changed in the car. I ask him when he’s going to take the car in for an oil change.

James calls any companies we’re having service problems with. I play Super Mario Bros on Wii.

James wrangles Chloe when she’s being insane. I drink wine.

James puts movies on our Netflix cue. I spontaneously announce movies throughout the day that I want to see.

James buys Groupons he thinks I’ll like for date nights. I constantly ask him when the Groupon is going to expire.

Okay – so maybe we’re not perfect (and maybe our roles aren’t exactly even all the time) – but the important thing is that we both feel appreciated for the things we do handle for each other.

Actually – who am I kidding – maybe the important thing is that I constantly tell James how much I appreciate him for handling EVERYTHING. Because, let’s be real – I started to write this blog post thinking it was going to be an even list between the two of us, but the further down I got – the more I realized that this man handles pretty much everything around here, and that I would be totally, completely, 100% lost without him.

So I guess what I’m saying is Thank You James… for handling it all and keeping me sane at times when I feel like my world is spinning off its axis. Clearly I couldn’t do any of this without you. Clearly.

And as proof of James’ awesomeness (yes, awesomeness is a word because I said so) … here’s a photos of my neatly folded laundry that I found on the table yesterday when I came out of my office to start dinner…
